Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) are nonhematopoetic stem cells that are  able to differentiating into a variety of cell types. MSC are currently being evaluated in various pre-clinical and clinical studies and offer significant potential as a novel cellular therapy for tissue regeneration and repair.

They were first identified in bone marrow. They are a rare cell type and in BM they make up about 1 in 10,000 nucleated cells. MSC reside in diverse host tissue and organs, such as circulating blood, adult and fetal Bone Marrow, spleen, amniotic fluid, cartilage, muscle, tendons, placenta, adipose tissues, fetal tissues, trabecular bone, dental pulp, etc.

Stem cell therapy, also known as regenerative medicine, promotes cell repair , and  also repair dysfunctional or injured tissue. These stem cells are developed  to specialize into specific types of cells, such as heart muscle cells, blood cells or nerve cells   etc.

The mesenchymal stem cells  are multipotent stromal cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types, for example  osteoblasts (bone cells), chondrocytes (cartilage cells), myocytes (muscle cells) and adipocytes (fat cells).       

 Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells traditionally found in the bone marrow. Mesenchymal stem cells can also be isolated from other tissues including cord blood, peripheral blood, fallopian tube, and fetal liver and lung. MSCs  able to differentiate to form adipocytes, cartilage, bone, tendons, muscle, and skin.

MSCs have ability  for self renewal while maintaining multipotency ,mesenchymal stem cells have therapeutic potential for tissue repair. MSCs have been shown to be capable of differentiating into multiple cell types including adipocytes, chondrocytes, osteocytes, and cardiomyocytes.
